My favorite scene
of the movie Fruitvale Station is between the minutes 21:15 and 27:15. During
this scene, Oscar, a 22-year-old ex-convicted African American boy drives up to
the bay. While he is still inside the car, he stares at a picture of his little
daughter and him. He seems to be pensive, and then he gets out of the car and
walks toward the ocean. He squats on top of a rock and he goes back in time,
thinking about that time when he was in prison.

He thinks about
that particular time, during New Year’s Eve, when his mother visited him. He was very
excited to see his mom and so was she. However, when his mom asked him about
what had happened to his face. Apparently, he had gotten in trouble, but he was
avoiding the question. During the conversation, they talked about his daughter
and how fast she growing up and what new things she was learning. He did not like
the fact that he was away from her and that he missed her so much. He could not
wait to see her after prison. Close to the end of the visit, his mom revealed
that she was not going to visit him in prison anymore. Near the end of this
scene, he’s back on the rock, and he decides to throw away the marihuana that
he had in his pants.
I think that this
is a very potential scene because the main character, Oscar, in this case, realizes
that he needs to quit the life that he had chosen before. He understands that
what he had done had sent him to prison, which did not allow him to spend time
with his loved ones. Right there, he decided to make a change in his life for a
better future. This scene let us see the old Oscar and the new one.
I also chose this scene, I really think you could find out everything you needed to know about Oscar just by watching that specific scene. Oscar knows he needs to change and this part of the movie does a great job conveying the idea that he wants to change.
