One of my favorite
scenes of the movie Pride is between 1:21:15 and 1:22:20. During this scene, Joe,
one of the youngest ones in the crew of LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the
Miners), is walking back home very happy of the things that he has been doing
for such a wonderful organization. While he is walking back to his parents
place, there is soundtrack played in the background that in a way helps reflect
the emotions of the moment and gives us an idea of what is about to happen. He
seems to be very proud of himself for what he has done so far, so he walks with
a smile on his face. It is very early in the morning, and his parents didn’t
know that he had spent the night out. So, he opens the door very carefully so
that he would not be noticed. He steps into the house and looks around,
realizing that his parents are awake in the living room.
When
he enters the room, he sees his mother crying and his father with a serious
face. Then, his smile is no longer on his face, but this one turns into a
concerned reaction. The soundtrack is still playing, but this time it is a
little more noticeable. His father stands up and, now Joe seems more worried
and clueless of what is going on. He then, he looks around and sees that all of
his private stuff is sitting on a small table in the middle of the room. The
angle of the camera, then focuses on pictures of him and other members of the
LGSM; newspapers where they appear on the front page, with all of the positive things
that they have achieved, etc.
I think that this
is a very potential scene because one the main characters, Joe, in this case, realizes
that his secret is no longer a secret, that his parents know all about it and
they might want to hear an explanation for that. He is a fundamental part of
the LGSM organization and he is proud of the things that he has done for the
community, specially for the miners. However, his parents would not understand
it that easily. He is in trouble, now and he needs to find a solution for this.
